ProAm Round 4

Posted by Andrew in News

Last weekend was round 4 of the Northwest ProAm Championship series! I went into the event with an entirely new car; we had completely rebuilt it since my big wreck at round 3.

We set the car up almost identically to the previous spec, and it felt pretty comfortable throughout practice.

New front lower control arms, tie rods and tension rods made the car feel slightly different; I spun in the infield during practice, but the alignment was the same and I was still able to drive the car pretty hard.

By the end of practice I was feeling pretty comfortable and looking forward to competition!

My first qualifying run was textbook; I drove a low-mid line on the bank, kept it smooth, powered into the infield and hit my clipping points without pushing it too much. The second run I ran harder but fell short, making several mistakes. I was confident that I had qualified with the first run, however, and I was right; I took the #1 spot!

After ProAm qualifying finished, the grassroots drivers played out their top 32 elimination while we prepped for competition. Everything looked great and I couldn't wait to battle for a shot at the podium! Unfortunately, I never got the chance; during my rodeo I blew my transmission bigtime, throwing reverse gear right out the side and creating a hole about 2" across. This on a race-ready G-Force GSR dogbox, which many Formula Drift teams use. We're awaiting word from G-Force but rest assured we will be up and running in time for Biggerfoot Bash and ProAm round 5!

Evergreen ProAm Round 3

Posted by Andrew in News

Last weekend was Formula Drift Round 5 and ProAm Round 3 up at Evergreen Speedway! Some crazy stuff went down over the weekend; here's a recap.

Thursday was a practice day for both FD and ProAm, but a pretty solid downpour closed the track down for most of the day. We got a couple runs in once the track dried off, but slippery conditions prevented us from gaining much.

Friday went much smoother. I felt confident throughout practice and eagerly awaited my chance to qualify.

Both qualifying runs were solid. I ran a clean line on run #1 to ensure a good standing, then drove harder on the second to get some extra practice and see if I could improve my score.

The qualifying order was announced in a quick driver's meeting; I had taken the #2 spot! The next day I woud be taking a buy run for the top 16 round, then lining up against Erich Hagen for top 8.

After making my buy run, I lined up to battle Erich, confident and ready. We were sent off and I blasted up to 4th, then inititated into the bank 100% committed. The car went sideways, then suddenly the rear end jumped violently as if I had hit a major bump. After a split second I realized my left rear wheel had completely come off! There was nothing I could do; that wheel was the only thing controlling the momentum of the car's rear; I was going to hit the wall.
In the video below, you can hear Jarod announcing that they clocked me at over 80mph. I probably scrubbed about 10mph before impact, so I hit the wall going about 70. Sadly, the frame is warped enough to warrant a new shell. We sourced a new car and a transplant is now underway at PSI.

For the crash, jump to 24:18.

A lot of people love and follow this car, and many were upset when I hit the wall and/or saw the aftermath. Don't worry; we may be down but we're most certainly not out! Keep an eye out for my fresh rebuild, coming soon to a track near you!

Visualizing @ Evergreen

Posted by Andrew in News

The first time Justin Pawlak gave me some tips we were out at Packwood messing around, and he was able to help me become smoother behind the wheel with some great tips to follow. This time we rented out Evergreen Speedway for a full day of coaching and practice so we could truly get down to business. Justin worked me hard and after burning through 10 tires I had shown much improvement while also realizing areas which still need development. Media was gathered throughout the day and YAER productions put together this skit with the help of Loren Haleston. The video is now featured on Motor Mavens, so be sure to check it out!
